Lado, a teacher, who arrives in Svanetia’s distant village, manages to earn the locals’ respect. He fells in love with a librarian Ketu without knowing that she is already engaged. Chope, who proposed Ketu before Lado’s arrival, tries to persuade the latter not to breach the centuries long customs. When at last Lado and Ketu decide to marry the bells of a local church start to toll.
