Post revolution Russia. German colonists living in the Altay area smuggle gold out of the country. Perekrestov is entrusted to find the gold mine and take it under his control. Eventually he finds the mine but is murdered by the conspirators. After almost twenty years the geologists, using the papers Perekrestov left behind find the same mine.
