Olenin, a Junker from St. Petersburg serves in the Caucasus. His penchant for the local traditions and customs and what’s more important his love to Marina, a Cossack woman, pushes him to settle there and get enlisted into the Cossacks squadrons. The only obstacle is that Marina is in love with a Cossack Lukashka who dies in a fight against a rival mountainous tribe. When Marina rejects Olenin’s next proposal he decides to leave.
