The mundane life of the 19th century Pyatigorsk high society is revived by the arrival of Pechorin from St. Petersburg. Pechorin’s love affair with Prince’s daughter Mary becomes much spoken of story. Pechorin rumples the woman’s life and lethally wounds his rival Grushnitski at the duel. Pechorin has to leave Pyatigorsk. Before his departure Mary tells him she is ready to marry Pechorin, but the latter confesses that he never loved the woman.
